About the game
Breakthrough is a modern abstract strategy game with only one kind of piece and rules you can learn in a minute. Each side starts with two full rows of pawns. On your turn one pawn steps a single square forward, straight or diagonally, into an empty square; captures happen only diagonally forward. There are no kings and no special moves. The first side to land a pawn on the opponent's back row wins, and so does the side that captures every enemy pawn.
Simple rules make for sharp fights, so this version helps you read them with a live threat map. Squares the enemy pawns attack are tinted red, squares your own pawns guard are outlined in blue, and when you pick up a pawn its possible steps show as green (safe), red (attacked) or gold (capture). The rival ladder grows from a 6x6 skirmish to the full 8x8 battlefield, and some boards are broken up by stone walls that block squares and create narrow lanes. Stars: win, win without hints, and win with at least four pawns still standing.
