About the game
Four Colors is a map-colouring puzzle. Each level is a hand-drawn style map split into countries with thick borders, and every country needs a colour from a small palette, usually three colours and on the more tangled maps four. The only rule is the cartographer's rule: two countries that share a border may not have the same colour. A clash makes the shared border flash red right away, so you can see the problem and back up. When every country is painted and no border is red, the map is finished.
The twist is the padlock. Some countries arrive already painted and locked, and those fixed colours spread their consequences across the map. With three colours a single locked country next to two others often decides a whole chain, and on most three-colour maps the locks leave exactly one way to finish. Four-colour maps have fewer locks but more countries crowding around each other. Thirty maps grow from 7 countries to 34. Hints paint the country with the most painted neighbours, or wipe out a colour that cannot lead to a finished map.
