About the game
Shut the Box is an old sailors' and pub game with a wooden box of numbered tiles. Each turn you roll two dice, or one die once the open tiles add up to six or less, and flip down any open tiles whose numbers add up to the roll: a 9 can shut the 9, or 4 and 5, or 1, 3 and 5. You keep rolling until no combination fits. The tiles still standing are your score, so lower is better, and flipping every tile down shuts the box and wins the match on the spot.
The twist is the dare. Once per turn, when you are stuck, you may roll one more time. If the new roll fits you carry on, but if it misses, your highest shut tile pops back up as a penalty. Six rivals wait on the ladder, from careless Pip to Captain Vex, who plays the mathematically best move every time, on boxes of 9, 10 and 12 tiles. Each match is three rounds; earn stars by winning, skipping hints and finishing under par.
