Spring Walk

Physics · Best on PC · 20 languages · Free

Walk a rainbow toy spring all the way down a staircase of uneven steps. Every drop gives it energy, every flat step drains it, and you can only push, never brake: arrive slow before a tall drop or it flies off, and push on the flats or it stalls.

  1. The spring flips from step to step by itself.
  2. Hold anywhere (or Space) while it flips: the PUSH bar on the right swings up and down, and when you let go its height is locked in as your push for the next landing.
  3. The ENERGY gauge shows where the spring's energy will land for the push you are holding: green dot means safe, red means it will stall (too low) or fly off (too high).
  4. The boxes at the top show the next four step heights; a dash is a flat step.
  5. Three slips per staircase.
  6. Stars: no slips for three.

About the game

Spring Walk is a timing and planning game about the classic toy coil spring that walks down stairs end over end. Here the staircase is badly built: some steps are a tiny drop, some are a cliff, and some are not a drop at all. The spring carries energy from step to step. A drop adds energy in proportion to its height, every landing loses a share of what it had, and a flat step adds nothing at all. Too little energy and it stalls on a step; too much and it springs right off the staircase.

Your only tool is a push. While the spring is flipping you hold your finger down and a push bar swings up and down; let go at the height you want and that push is added at the next landing. There is no brake, which is what makes it a puzzle. A run of flats needs strong pushes to keep going, but if a tall drop follows, you have to let the energy sink first so the drop does not throw the spring off. The energy gauge previews the landing for the push you are holding, and the strip at the top shows the next four steps. A faster spring also flips faster, so the rhythm of your pushes changes with every step. Eighteen staircases grow from twelve to nearly forty steps.
