About the game

Interval Ear is a gentle ear-training game. Every question plays two notes, and you name the distance between them, the interval, by tapping one of the birds perched on a ladder. Small steps like the minor second sit near the bottom and wide leaps like the octave near the top, so the ladder itself is a picture of the sizes. Each level asks for a set number of correct answers before three misses, the speaker replays the notes as often as you like, and a hint names the interval and its bird.

The twist is the birds. Each interval belongs to one bird, and that bird's call is a short tune that starts with exactly that interval: the cuckoo calls a minor third, the owl hoots a perfect fifth, the swan rises a full octave. Tap the note next to any bird to hear it. Musicians learn intervals the same way, by linking each one to a song they already know, and here the songs are built in. Thirty levels start with two very different intervals, move to close neighbours, then play the notes going down and finally both at once.
