About the game
Spades is the great partnership trick-taking game. Four players sit around the table, you and your partner facing each other against two rivals, and each gets thirteen cards. Before play, everyone bids how many tricks they expect to win, and the two bids of a team add up to its contract. Then the tricks begin: you must follow the suit that was led if you can, the highest card of that suit wins, and spades are always trump, beating every other suit. Spades cannot be led until one has been played. Make your contract and score ten points per bid trick plus one per extra trick, but every ten extra tricks, called bags, cost a hundred points. Miss it and you lose ten per trick. A bold Nil bid promises zero tricks for a hundred points either way.
The twist is your partner's signal. After bidding, your partner shows how sure they are, with a confidence bar, the range of tricks they really expect and their strongest suit, so you know whether to lean on their bid or cover for it. Six tables lead from a friendly porch game to a sharp grand final. First team to two hundred wins.
