About the game
Briscola is one of Italy's favourite card games, played in cafés and at kitchen tables for centuries. It uses a 40-card deck in four suits, coins, cups, swords and clubs, and each player holds just three cards. One card is turned face up under the deck and its suit becomes the trump, the briscola. You play any card you like; the trick goes to the highest trump, or if no trump was played, to the highest card of the suit that was led. The winner draws first, then the other player, until the deck runs out. Aces and threes are the big prizes, worth 11 and 10 points, kings 4, queens 3 and jacks 2. There are 120 points in all, so more than 60 wins.
The twist is a little card-counting help. The trump card sits face up under the deck the whole game and is taken by whoever makes the very last draw, so you can plan for it. A tracker beside the table shows which aces and threes are still out, and the score of banked points is always visible. Six rivals sit at the table, from a relaxed old cat to a sharp badger who counts every card and plays the last three tricks perfectly. Stars: win, win without hints, and win with 80 points or more.
