Tent Pitch

Physics · Best on PC · 20 languages · Free

Stake guy ropes so your tent stands through a storm. Every rope pulls the pole toward its stake, so the tensions have to balance, and sand lets stakes rip out. Check the wind forecast, then pitch. 12 campsites.

Controls

Tap
  1. Tap the ground to drive a stake; a rope runs from it to the top of the tent pole. Tap a stake again to tighten its rope (three levels); a fourth tap pulls it out.
  2. Rock and water take no stakes, and stakes in sand rip out under heavy load. Ropes far from the tent pull sideways better than ropes close to it.
  3. The strip at the top shows the gusts to come: blue from the left, orange from the right. Tap Pitch!
  4. to raise the tent; if the pole tips over, the camp fails.

About the game

Tent Pitch is a small physics puzzle about getting a tent through a windy night. Each campsite is a strip of ground with grass, sand, rock and the odd stream, and a single tent pole stands in the middle. You have a few guy ropes. Drive stakes into the ground and each rope runs to the top of the pole; tap a stake to tighten its rope. When you are happy, pitch the tent and the storm arrives, gust after gust, exactly as the forecast strip promised.

The twist is that every rope pulls, always, toward its own stake. One tight rope against a slack one leans the tent before the wind even starts, and the lean is what the gusts exploit. Ropes staked far away hold the pole sideways much better than steep ropes close to the tent, but the ground decides where you can stake: rock and water refuse stakes, and stakes in sand rip out when a gust loads them too hard, which can collapse a tent that looked perfect. Twelve campsites bring taller tents, stronger gusts from both sides, more sand and more ropes to balance. Stars come from the biggest tilt during the storm.
