About the game

Roman Forge is a numeral workshop. Orders come in two kinds. A forge order shows an ordinary number, and you build its Roman numeral by tapping ingots marked I, V, X, L, C, D and M, each one hammered onto a glowing bar with a clang and a burst of sparks, then press OK. A read order hands you a finished numeral such as XLVII, and you type its value on the keypad. Three mistakes and the bar cracks.

The twist is that the tricky part, subtraction, is taught one pair at a time. You start with only I and V, then a level introduces IV with a lesson card, then X, then IX, and so on through XL, XC, CD and CM, up to M and numbers as large as 3999. Ingots you have not learned yet stay locked, the first questions of a new level lean on the new pair, and if you write a value the long way, like IIII for 4, the forge tells you the value is right but the form is not. The hint button splits the number into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones and shows each part as a numeral.
